Enforcement Officers Join Wyoming Hall of Fame
Cheyenne,
WY (Office of the Governor) -- It is not an honor to be taken
lightly, Gov. Dave Freudenthal said today as he inducted two law enforcement
officers into the Wyoming Law Enforcement Hall of Fame in a ceremony in
the Capitol Rotunda.
"To be acknowledged
by your peers as being among the best of the best in Wyoming law enforcement
history is an incredible tribute," Freudenthal said.
The new inductees
are John Bey, former sheriff of Converse County, and Larry Majerus, the
former Chief of Police in Douglas and the current Deputy Director of the
Wyoming Department of Homeland Security.
John Bey began his
law enforcement career with the Scottsbluff Police Department in Nebraska
in 1965. From 1967 to 1982, he served as a trooper with the Wyoming Highway
Patrol. He was elected Sheriff of Converse County in 1982, and served
six terms before retiring in 2006. He continues his law enforcement career
as Chief of Police in Medora, N.D., near Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
Larry Majerus began
his career with the Lake City Police Department in Minnesota in 1974.
He joined the Douglas Police Department in 1979, and was appointed Chief
of Police in 1984. He left the Douglas Police Department in 2003 to accept
a position as Deputy Director of the Wyoming Department of Homeland Security.
During their concurrent
terms in office, which spanned nearly 20 years, Bey and Majerus fostered
a strong working relationship and aimed to promote and extend a spirit
of cooperation between sheriff's departments and police departments statewide.
The men were instrumental
in combining the Sheriffs' Association and Chiefs' Association, which
formerly were separate entities into the Wyoming Association of Sheriffs
and Chiefs of Police.
